Theme of World Population Day 2024:

"Leaving Behind Millions," This article highlights the pressing issue of inequality in Pakistan amidst the backdrop of World Population Day 2024, themed "Interwoven Lives, Threads of Hope." The article underscores the disparity between the interconnectedness of the global community and the persistent inequities experienced by millions, particularly in Pakistan. UN Secretary General António Guterres emphasizes the importance of data in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, yet Pakistan lags in leveraging its comprehensive data collection to address inequities. Despite extensive data gathered by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) through various censuses and surveys, there is a lack of analysis and application, leading to unaddressed disparities in health, education, and employment. The Population Council's analysis reveals stark contrasts in access to essential services, with rural areas, especially in Balochistan, facing significant challenges. The article also touches on the nearly universal mobile phone density as a rare equalizer amidst widespread inequality. The elite's indifference to poverty exacerbates these issues, with marginalized groups, particularly women and children, suffering the most. Women's empowerment and children's rights, key components of the SDGs, remain neglected, leading to high fertility rates and poor health and education outcomes. The article calls for a significant shift in policy and attitude from the country's leadership and elite to address these disparities and meet the SDGs by 2030.
